Developing quick problem solving skills via primary math tuition programme

Students who enroll in our primary math tuition will be introduced to the key components of the examination based on the latest format derived by the Singapore Examinations Assessment Board (SEAB). Our tutors have identified the main considerations that influence the way examiners set the questions and based their predictions on past examination trends to prepare students adequately. Hence, it is highly encouraged for parents to attain a basic and brief understanding of the primary math syllabus so as to be aware of the study requirements.

Math Exam Format & Essential Skills

Understanding the PSLE Math Syllabus

It is important for parents to know more about the PSLE Math syllabus to help their children in their studies or search for resources to teach their children. By knowing the requirements, students can be better prepared for their examination especially for PSLE. For PSLE Mathematics, students have to complete two papers.

Paper 1:
Multiple Choice & Short-Answer Questions

Students must complete Booklets A and B within 50 minutes. Booklet A covers multiple choice questions that carry either 1 mark or 2 marks each. As for Booklet B, students must complete 15 short answer questions that carry either 1 mark or 2 marks each. This paper occupies 40% of the entire grade. Students may use the calculator for this paper.

Paper 2:
Short-Answer & Structured Questions

Students must attempt 5 short answer questions and 13 structured or long-answer questions within 1 hour 40 minutes. In total, this is 60% of the entire grade. Students may use calculators in Paper 2.

Both Paper 1 and 2 are held on the same day but with a break in between the papers. You may view the 2017 PSLE Mathematics Syllabus (0008) for a better understanding of the PSLE Mathematics.

Math Exam Trends

How primary math tutors view the recent examination trend?

Over the years, more heuristic (different ways to go about solving problem sums) questions are appearing and these are the type of questions students need help with. Students are required to know more than basic knowledge of the math concepts to answer them well. It will be very useful when students understand real life applications of math concepts.

Therefore, during the primary math tuition programme, the tutors will relate the application of math knowledge to real world problems, so as to reinforce conceptual understanding. Such a learning approach will be vital as students will be introduced to more real world applications while studying O Level Mathematics at the secondary level.
